YF&R to host annual Livestock Judging Contest

September 13, 2005

The single largest state agricultural youth judging contest will occur Friday, Sept. 16 when Oklahoma Farm Bureau and the State Fair of Oklahoma hosts the 15th annual Young Farmers and Ranchers Livestock Judging Contest.

"We expect participation from about 750 students who will be competing for Farm Bureau jackets, plaques and prize money," said Todd Honer, contest chairman. "We’re again sponsoring those prizes this year, which makes this contest one of the best prize offerings for state youth."

The Oklahoma City contest will include three classes each of cattle and hogs, and two classes of sheep. All contestants will be required to give three sets of reasons–one on cattle, one on sheep and one on swine.

Both the 4-H and FFA Divisions include junior and senior levels.

Junior 4-H includes participants who are 13 or under as of Jan. 1, 2005. Senior 4-H participants are 14 and up as of Jan. 1, 2005. The FFA Junior Division includes grades 8-10, and Senior Division participants will be grades 11-12.

Honer said contestants may compete on a team or as individuals. FFA Chapters and 4-H Clubs may enter up to three teams total.

"Registration will begin in the State Fair of Oklahoma Horse Barn No. 6 at 7 a.m.," Honer said. "Judging starts shortly after 8 a.m."

"We look forward to another great contest again this year," said Honer.

For more information about the contest, contact the Field Services Division at 405-523-2300.
