YF&R members to represent Oklahoma in AFBF competitive events

January 10, 2019

Oklahoma Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers members will compete in three competitive events at the upcoming American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting Jan. 11-16 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Washita County Farm Bureau members Nocona and Jordan Cook will compete in the AFBF YF&R Achievement Award competitive event, which recognizes young farmers and ranchers who have excelled in their farm or ranch and have honed their leadership abilities. Competitors are evaluated on their excellence in management, growth and scope of their enterprise and self-initiative that has been displayed throughout the farm or ranch. The couple was honored with the OKFB YF&R Achievement Award at the organization’s annual meeting in November. Read more about the Cooks here.

Joshua Anderson, a Johnston County Farm Bureau member, will compete to be recognized as the AFBF YF&R Excellence in Agriculture Award winner. The award highlights young Farm Bureau members who are involved in agriculture but have not earned a majority of their income from an owned agricultural enterprise. Participants in the event are evaluated on their understanding of agricultural issues, leadership experiences and achievement, and their ability to communicate the agriculture story. At the OKFB annual meeting in November, Anderson was honored with the OKFB YF&R Excellence in Agriculture Award. Read more about Anderson and his involvement in agriculture here.

OKFB will be represented by Payne County Farm Bureau member Emma Jumper in the AFBF YF&R Discussion Meet, which simulates a committee meeting where participants are evaluated on an exchange of ideas and information on a pre-determined topic. Participants build basic discussion skills, develop a keen understanding of important agricultural issues and explore how groups can pool knowledge to reach consensus and solve problems. Jumper earned the ability to compete at AFBF after winning the OKFB YF&R Discussion Meet held at the organization’s annual meeting in November. Read more about Jumper here.

The competitions will begin on Saturday, Jan. 11. Stay tuned to the OKFB social media platforms to learn the results of the competitions.
