The countdown to the state’s largest annual farm convention continues as Farm Bureau’s Resolutions Committee whittled down the long list of issues proposed for discussion during the committee’s Oct. 23-24 meeting in Oklahoma City.
Over 500 issues or resolutions were submitted by the state’s 77 county Farm Bureaus. Among the 95 issues making the final cut are proposals to eliminate estate taxes, enhance protection for private property rights and continue income protection under the new federal farm law.
“This is an important step in our policy development process,” said Steve Kouplen, OFB President. “We truly have a grassroots structure that allows input from all our farm and ranch families.”
Several of the proposed resolutions address the increased oil and gas exploration.
“Our members are concerned about the damage caused by seismic survey crews and the possible fire dangers associated with oil wells,” Kouplen said.
The need to improve the state’s rural infrastructure also was voiced by the farm leaders.
“We need to be able to efficiently transport our product from farms to markets,” Kouplen said.
The Beggs rancher expressed concern about the “information highway” bypassing rural Oklahoma.
“To be competitive, our rural areas, especially schools and businesses, must have access to high speed Internet connections.”
These and other issues will be discussed during the voting delegate segment of the annual Farm Bureau convention Nov. 10. The convention begins Friday, Nov. 9, with remarks from Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, and a special Oklahoma Centennial presentation. Fifth District Congressman Mary Fallin has been invited to deliver the key note address.
There will be seminars on the 2007 farm bill and grain and livestock market forecasts.
Friday evening the organization will recognize its outstanding leaders, including naming the state’s Farm Family of the Year and the top young farmer and rancher.
Election of a new state Farm Bureau president will highlight the Nov. 10 session. Participants will enjoy listening to country western star Ronnie Milsap after the evening banquet.
The convention concludes with a Sunday morning vespers service and motivational speakers.
