Pennsylvania Farm Bureau voiced its opposition to a recently proposed rule jointly issued by the Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers that attempts to expand federal regulation of land areas as “waters of the U.S.,” during a field hearing today before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Speaking on behalf of Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, beef and grain farmer Tommy Nagle testified that farmers are concerned about the possible consequences of the proposal on farms and the future viability of family businesses, especially when you consider that land features identified in the proposal are found extensively on farms […]

American Farm Bureau tells members to ‘ditch’ EPA water rule
The American Farm Bureau Federation asked its members earlier this week to resist a proposed rule from the Environmental Protection Agency that it says will impose unworkable regulations on the nation’s farms. Published Monday in the Federal Register, the more-than-111,000-word “Waters of the U.S.” proposed rule reflects the EPA’s latest interpretation of the 1972 Clean Water Act. The rule could ultimately lead to the unlawful expansion of federal regulation to cover routine farming and ranching practices as well as other common private land uses, such as building homes. “This rule is an end run around congressional intent and rulings by […]

The Kenton area’s lava formations features dinosaur tracks, Indian pictographs, caves and many peculiar rock formations. Participants on the tour will visit Black Mesa State Park to see different fossils and petrified wood. This area is believed to have been occupied by humans as far back as 10,000 years ago. […]
OKFB pleased with Right to Farm passing Senate
Oklahoma Farm Bureau thanks the Oklahoma Senate for passing HJR 1006, known as the right to farm resolution, with a vote of 44-3. The resolution would allow Oklahoma voters in November to vote on a constitutional amendment protecting the rights of the state’s farmers and ranchers to produce food, fuel and fiber. The resolution will next go to conference committee. “We appreciate the work of Sen. Eddie Fields and his fellow senators for passing right to farm in the senate,” said Tom Buchanan, OKFB president. “We urge the conference committee to pass the bill and allow Oklahoma voters the opportunity […]
Legislative Update with Tom Buchanan
The following article is an opinion piece written by OKFB President Tom Buchanan that was used in The Journal Record regarding the listing of the lesser prairie chicken. Oklahoma Farm Bureau members are disappointed with a March 27 announcement by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species. This was done under a sue-and-settle-induced deadline involving the Endangered Species Act. The premature and indefensible decision unduly harms landowners and business interests in Oklahoma and circumvents ESA procedures that are required by statute. For the past several years, the farm bureau has been […]
Rural women leaders feed state legislators
State lawmakers received a “taste of the country” April 15 during the annual Oklahoma Farm Bureau Farm City Festival at the Capitol. The event is sponsored by the OKFB Women’s Leadership Team, consisting of rural women leaders from throughout the state. The rural leaders use the Capitol’s first floor rotunda area to set out a spread of freshly prepared food, much of it home baked. There were trays of fresh vegetables, sandwiches, cheese and fruit, cookies, cupcakes and brownies. “We are here today feeding our legislators and their staff with good old, homegrown food and we want to show them […]

Legislative Update with John Collison
What is all the fuss over this water issue about? Is it the haves verses the have nots? Is it Oklahoma verses Texas? Maybe it’s the water consumers verses the water viewers? Is it east verses west? As I talk to each of you around the state, I hear many different stories about what we should do with our water. That’s right, I said it. The surface water in the state belongs to all the people of Oklahoma. The reason it belongs to you and me, and not just a handful of people, is because we have each paid for […]
