Kutter Jewell, a sixth grade student at Burlington Elementary School, was recently recognized for his winning entry in the Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom storyboard contest. Jewell’s teacher is Alfalfa County Farm Bureau member Terry Pederson.
The annual contest runs in conjunction with a cross-curricular AITC lesson that is aligned to several state standards. This year’s theme was “Oklahoma Agriculture: Oklahoma Strong,” and there were different types of contests for each grade level, including a poster contest, essay contest and bulletin board contest. Sixth grade students from across the state competed in the storyboard contest and were encouraged to use drawings and short stories to illustrate the theme.
“I based my storyboard on what Oklahomans do. They’re strong and they strengthen the economy,” Jewell said. “Our agricultural industry is one of the best in the nation, and we produce a bunch of beef, pork and wheat. We care about each other and help each other to get through it all.”
AITC’s Dana Bessinger presented Jewell with a framed copy of his storyboard drawing during an all-school assembly on Feb. 13. As a contest winner, Jewell will have the opportunity to participate in Ag Day at the Oklahoma Capitol on March 26. He will meet with Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Jim Reese, receive a cash award from the Oklahoma Beef Council and a citation from his legislators and then join other AITC contest winners at a celebratory party at the Department of Agriculture.
