The Terry and Robin Bryant Family of Camargo received the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee’s District One Farm and Ranch Family Recognition during the organization’s 77th annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Norman.
Terry and Robin raise Longhorn and BueLingo cattle in the rolling hills east of Camargo. The unique BueLingo cattle sport a wide, vertical stripe of white sandwiched between more traditional cattle colors of black, red or silver. The unique animals draw quite a bit of attention from passers-by.
“It’s amazing how many just stop and take pictures,” Robin said. “I looked out there one day and there were three vehicles just stopped out here, taking pictures of the cattle.”
The Bryants are proud to raise the BueLingo breed, which Terry said bring a premium when it comes time to sell them.
“Most of the time our BueLingos will go directly to a feed yard up in Kansas,” Terry said. “They do better in the feed yard, and we get top-dollar price out of them that way.”
Beyond the family’s cattle herd, Terry has built fence full-time for the past 25 years. After initially moving away from the family ranch and working pipeline jobs, he was proud to return home to help local farmers and ranchers and to continue the family legacy of ranching.
“I just love being able to help the farmers to get their fences where maybe it will last as long as some of the others or longer than what they have had and help improve the land,” Terry said. “And I love being a caretaker of this place. I’m blessed to get to do it.”
When a series of devastating springtime wildfires swept through Dewey County, threatening the Bryants’ cattle and land, the family helped their local community battle and get through the fires, and Terry worked tirelessly with the local rural water district to get water back to rural residents as quickly as possible.
In addition to Terry’s work with the rural water district, the Bryants are involved with the BueLingo Beef Cattle Society and the International Texas Longhorn Association. Robin also served as a delegate on the OKFB resolutions committee.
OKFB’s Farm & Ranch Family Recognition program honors a farm and ranch family in each of OKFB’s nine districts who upholds the best traditions of Oklahoma agriculture and rural Oklahoma as they raise food and fiber for our state and beyond.
“Our farm and ranch families play a vital role in growing food, caring for the land and making our rural communities vibrant,” said Kitty Beavers, 2018 OKFB WLC Chairman. “Our Women’s Leadership Committee is proud to recognize these families’ hard work and dedication to agriculture and Oklahoma. Each of these families is a tremendous asset to Oklahoma as they continue some of the best traditions our state knows.”
As part of their recognition, the family received a cash award along with a custom sign to hang at their farm gate.
The Oklahoma Farm Bureau Annual Meeting is the organization’s largest yearly gathering of farmers and ranchers. At the event, members vote on grassroots policy, elect leaders and award outstanding individuals.
